Eric Lehnert began at Stony Brook in 2000 as an Assistant Athletic Trainer. After receiving his bachelor's degree in biology with a concentration in athletic training from Stony Brook University in 1994, Lehnert continued as an athletic training student at Stony Brook. During that time he continued to pursue his master's degree from Long Island University-Brooklyn in athletic training and sports sciences. Lehnert has been a NATABOC certified athletic trainer since 1998 and became a NYS certified athletic trainer in March 2000.

Prior to coming to Stony Brook he spent three years as the assistant athletic trainer at Dowling College. While at Dowling, he was also employed at Elite Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation as a Certified Athletic Trainer/Emergency Medical Technician. In 1999, he received his NYS certification as an Emergency Medical Technician-Basic and in 2001 he received his Emergency Medical Technician-Critical Care certification, an advanced life support provider. Lehnert is an instructor for the American Red Cross, American Heart Association, as well as an instructor for the Emergency Care and Safety Institute (ECSI), in CPR-For the Professional Rescuer, Automated External Defibrillation, and First Aid-Responding to Emergencies. He is responsible for the yearly CPR/AED training of the entire athletics staff. Lehnert serves as the insurance coordinator, handling insurance claims as well as helping to coordinate physician and diagnostic testing referrals, as well as design and implementation of rehabilitation programs for the injured student-athletes.

In addition to his Athletic Training Room activities, Lehnert is an Approved Clinical Instructor in the Athletic Training Education Program and is an Adjunct Instructor in both ATEP and the Graduate Coaching Certification Program. His primary sport assignments are women's basketball and softball and he oversees tennis.
