Stony Brook Baseball Falls to East Carolina In Extra Innings, 4-3
March 5, 2006 Greenville, N.C. - The Stony Brook baseball team erupted for 11 hits at the plate, but fell short as they lost to East Carolina, 4-3 in extra innings. ECU rallied back from a one-run deficit in the eleventh inning and took advantage of a SBU error to complete the three-game sweep of Stony Brook. With the loss the Seawolves fall to 0-6 on the season and ECU improves to 11-3. Stony Brook opened up the scoring in the top of the fourth as Kyle Traylor ripped an RBI double to plate Isidro Fortuna to give the Seawolves the 1-0 advantage. ECU wasted no time in answering, as the home team would tie the game in the bottom of the frame when Brandon Henderson scored on a wild pitch. The Seawolves reclaimed the lead in the top of the eighth inning when Traylor struck again. Traylor scored Fortuna for the second time of the game with an RBI single with two outs. The home team answered in the bottom of the eighth, when Dale Mollenhauer scored on a fielder's choice. Traylor got the rally started for Stony Brook in the eleventh, when he led of the frame with a single up the middle. Following singles off the bats of Chris Sipp and Michael Tansey, SBU had the bases loaded with only one out. Jon Pasieka came through with a sacrifice to plate Traylor and give Stony Brook the 3-2 lead. The Pirates had the answer once again, as a Stony Brook error put Ryan Wood on to lead off the eleventh. Following an ECU sacrifice, Drew Schieber ripped a double to even the game at three runs apiece. The Pirates loaded the bases and with two outs, Mollenhauer drew a walk to score Harrison Eldridge and give the home team the sweep.
In a no decision, Matt Restivo threw six solid innings for the Seawolves, allowing only one run and striking out eight. Traylor led the offensive outburst for Stony Brook, finishing 3-for-5 at the plate with two RBI and a run scored. Robert Leonard fared well at the plate, going 2-for-5 and Fortuna scored two runs for the Seawolves. Nick Abel (0-1) picked up the loss for Stony Brook, allowing two runs, zero earned, in .2 innings of work. Matthews got the nod for ECU, allowing only one run in six innings of work and striking out nine. Mollenhauer finished the day 2-for-5 at the plate, driving in one run and scoring one. Carter Harrel (2-0) picked up the win, throwing .2 innings and allowing no runs. The Seawolves look to end their losing streak when the travel to New Orleans to take on the University of New Orleans in a three-game set. Game one is scheduled for Friday, March 10 at 6:00 P.M. |
