Women's Soccer Defeats Sacred Heart, 3-0, In First Scrimmage of 2008 Season
Aug. 13, 2008
Stony Brook, N.Y. - Freshman Colleen McKenna (Manorville, N.Y.), freshman Gabriella Petralia (West Hempstead, N.Y.) and senior Brooke Barbuto (Syracuse, N.Y.) each scored a goal as the Stony Brook University women's soccer team defeated the Sacred Heart Pioneers, 3-0, in its first scrimmage of the 2008 season, on Wednesday afternoon at LaValle Stadium. McKenna gave Stony Brook a 1-0 lead midway through the first of the three 30-minute periods the teams played as she gathered a loose ball in front of the net and put it past the Sacred Heart goalkeeper. Petralia extended the lead in the second period, heading in a Barbuto corner kick. Barbuto closed the scoring in the game's final minutes, striking a 20-yard free kick into the lower right corner. "Obviously we're very pleased with the result from this first scrimmage," head coach Sue Ryan said. "We have great depth and I think that showed today. Our younger players also performed very well and I think they will make great contributions this season." The Seawolves will play another scrimmage at Rutgers on Sunday at 4 p.m. before opening up the 2008 regular season against Long Island on Friday, Aug. 22 at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
