Allenberg, Viola Lead Women's Soccer To 1-0 Victory Over Iona
Aug. 28, 2008
New Rochelle, N.Y. - Senior Trine Allenberg (Roberts, Wisc.) scored in the 23rd minute and junior goalkeeper Marisa Viola (Cutchogue, N.Y.) stopped five shots to make it stand, leading the Stony Brook women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Iona on Thursday afternoon at Mazzella Field. Stony Brook improves to 1-1-0 while Iona falls to 0-2-0. Allenberg took a pass from freshman Colleen McKenna (Manorville, N.Y.) just outside the 18-yard box on the left side and launched a shot into the lower right corner of the net to give the Seawolves the early lead. Viola was able to prevent the Gaels from scoring the rest of the half to preserve Stony Brook's 1-0 advantage going into the break. SBU outshot Iona 8-6 in the opening half in addition to having a 2-0 corner kick advantage. The Seawolves continued to dominate the ball in the second half as Iona was able to manage just three shots. Viola made two saves in the period including one on a Kerrie Deignan head ball with just over two minutes remaining. Suzanne Baldissard made four saves for the Gaels who were outshot 13-9 by the Seawolves. The shutout was the 17th of Viola's career, moving her to second on the programs all-time list. Stony Brook returns to action on Sunday, Aug. 31, traveling to take on Providence. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
